The Brain can be divided into three parts. Each one is visibly different from the others, and serves differing functions.
The Neo-Cortex or Human Brain does most of what we consider “thinking.” It consumes more oxygen and glucose than any other organ in the body. Most of our waking brainwaves originate here.
The Limbic System, Paleo-Cortex or Animal Brain is the emotional center of the brain, and produces all of our animal impulses. It does most of what we consider “feeling.” Most of our emotional work is done here.
The Brain Stem or Reptilian Brain is the foundation of our central nervous system, and controls all the functions vital to our physical survival.
